Understanding white trillium’s northern range edge using demographic surveys

– Anna Hargreaves (McGill University), Kristin Olson (Lethbridge University)

Trillium grandiflorum is not a species-at-risk in Canada, but is considered vulnerable in Quebec, where it reaches the northernmost edge of its North American range. We will use Trillium grandiflorum as a study system to test the following questions: (1) What is the cause of T. grandiflorum’s northern range edge? (2) Where will T. grandiflorum’s habitat be in a warmer future?

The Kenauk Institute has robust populations of white trillium. These populations are thought to be some of the most northern populations of the species. Collecting demographic and habitat data from these populations will contribute to our understanding of how populations change as we get closer to the species’ northern range edge.
